Gallery Bergen of Bergen Community College is pleased to
announce a group exhibition titled “Fractured History/Reconstructed Identity: Degrees of Westernization in Armenian Painting and Other Mediums,” that will open to the public on 3 April 2012 and will remain on view through 26 April 2012.
The exhibition will be comprised of contemporary paintings, sculptures and works in other mediums by twenty one Armenian artists based in their homeland and the Diaspora. As the title of the exhibition indicates, the exhibition intends to explore the extent to which a given work is formalistically connected to a major twentieth-century aesthetic trajectory as much as it necessitates a socio-historical interpretation within the context of Armenian culture.
Despite the turbulent historical phases of Armenia during the first quarter of the twentieth century, followed by the suppression of Armenian culture’s national identity within the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic that persisted until 1990, a succinct
glimpse at artworks of the past two decades provides signs of introspection, ambition, innovation, diversity, optimism and forward looking progress within Armenian artistic achievements and culture.
The exhibition is curated by Vicki Shoghag Hovanessian, who has been an avid collector of Western and Armenian art over the past three decades. Within the sphere of today’s rapidly changing aesthetic boundaries, this exhibition of Hovanessian pays a long-standing and essential tribute to the highly accomplished outputs of a group of Armenian artists whose fractured history and reconstructed identity remains to be universally assessed and culturally recognized.
Closing reception and talk featuring Peter Balakian will be held on 26 April 2012, from 6:00-8:00 p.m in the Technology Education Center, Room 128. A Facebook Event will follow.
