World habitat Day 2008: Theme: Harmonious Cities

On 6 October 2006 from 2:30pm to 6:00 pm a special event took place by UN-HABITAT at the Dag Hammarskjold Library Auditorium. The theme was: World Habitat day 2008

By chance I found out that day about it, while I was going towards my office coming from a session at the UNSRC Friendship Club. I attended part of the event, since special friends were involved at the Panel Discussion: namely Mr. Vahan Tanal. His lovely wife Lisa was there also. And that's the day I was very lucky, thanks to them to meet very energetic and down to earth Anoush Vera Nazarian and also Prof.Harold Takooshian.

Hre is the description of the event:

The United nations has designated the first Monday of October of every year as World Habitat Day. It is intended to reflect the state of human settlements and the basic right to adequate shelter and to remind the world of its collective responsibility for the future of the human habitat.

This year, the theme of Harmonious Cities was selected to raise awareness about the problems of rapid urbanization, it's impact on the environment, the growth of slums, and the urbanization of poverty as more and more people teem into towns and cities looking for a better life. In an age where for the first time half of humanity is now living in towns and cities, the quest for adequate shelter for all along with basic services such as water, sanitation, electricity, decent health care, safe streets, etc., is more urgent than eer, especially in developing countries. There should also be no illusion that cities have the greatest impact on the environment and climate change. And where they are poorly managed, with weak governance structures, it is their citizens and their surrounds that suffer most.

Mr. Vahan Tanal, Senior Consultant, Parsons Brinckerhoff gave great presentation. I'll add the photos and video I took of this very interesting session.
