MARCH 9 - Neery Melkonian Tribute Evening at AGBU - Neery Melkonian was a groundbreaking contemporary art curator, critic and writer. After her sad passing in July 2016, she leaves behind an important legacy of critical discourse and community building among diasporan Middle Eastern and Armenian art and artists. Saturday March 11, 2017 - Movie Night
A special movie screening of "The Line - Kyanq u Kriv - Կյանք ու կռիվ," will take place at 8pm in the church auditorium. The movie was recently released and was a major success in Armenia. It is a story about love, patriotism and real events happening in Artsakh. The story takes place during the early 1990s in Armenia and the featured character takes us through a journey from a timid teenager to a brave soldier challenged by the atrocities of the Artsakh war, friendship and love. The movie, directed by Mher Mkrtchyan, is in Armenian with English subtitles. Admission $12 (adults), $8 (ages 5-14 years). Light refreshments and popcorn will be served. March 13-19SR Socially Relevant (™) Film Festival New York, a relatively new non-profit film festival, launches its 4th edition March 13-19, 2017 - at Cinepolis Chelsea, The School of Visual Arts MFA Social Documentary and the Center for Remembering and Sharing. Closing night Awards Ceremonies will take place at the Tenri Cultural Institute in the Village. The Mission of the SR Film Festival is to shine the spotlight on filmmakers who tell compelling, socially relevant (™), human interest stories, across a broad range of social issues. The festival was created as a response to the proliferation of violence and violent forms of storytelling in media and entertainment. SR(™) believes in the power of cinema in raising awareness towards social issues and promoting positive social change. During its first three years, the festival has showcased 157 films from 33 countries. Submissions are received from all over the world. Friday, March 31 at 8pm MUSICAL ARMENIA at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall in New York City. The cost of admission is only 25 dollars. Featured in the 2017 Musical Armenia concert are two outstanding artists: cellist Hasmik Vardanyan and violinist Haik Kazazyan. Accompanying them are two accomplished musicians: Hayk Arsenyan and Karen Hakobyan.
