Armenians and Social Media

Since mid-90s I have been involved with the Internet. I was glad I had the oppotunity to work at the United Nations' Dag Hammarskjold Library at the Headquarters. Right from the beginning I was able to get a feel of the internet and it's possibilities. One of my functions was our clients with their non-UN related information needs. I used to created on index cards list of FAQ requests. The staff, diplomats and NGOs used to xerox my lists. Eventually I started to transfer them over to the Internet.

All the social media tools started coming up. I saw the benefits of various social media tools: Yahoo groups, Facebook, twitter, instagram, Pinterest as marketing, communicating, disseminating information. Those were an extension of what I was already doing as my daily functions. I also did promote officially on twitter the updated United Nations Peacekeeping mission maps.

I was member of various Facebook Armenian groups. However, they weren't addressing the needs of the New York Armenian community. You would get limited information. I started the New York Armenians group, with the promotion of all the events that were done by all the Armenian organizations, businesses and institutions. There was a lot of volunteer work done to put together amazing events, however the community at large wasn't aware of it. The marketing was missing to reach wider audience. We used to have the Armenian Reporter and there wasn't anything in New York to fill the void after it closed it's doors. Hence the New York Armenian group started in 2010. I was the only one posting, the rest of the members were silent. At times I used to wander if what I was doing was really reaching the community. The answer came when the group had about 500 members. Grant Petrosian, then presdent of Fordham Armenian Society got in touch with me. They appreciated what I was doing. It was encouraging to be acknowledged on 13 April 2011 and given a certificate of recognition by Grnt Petrosian, President, Fordham Armenian Society and Prof. Harold Takooshian, Advisor, Fordham Armenian Society.

Later on, the president of the Armenian Network, Ms. Taleen Khachadourian noticed me and got me on the executive committee as community relations and co-admin of the Facebook group.

I am admin of the following groups:

New York Armenians

Support Armenian Business - this group had lost it's admin and when I was doing a search, FB asked if I wanted to be admin. Of course asap I took over and assigned several trusted other New York/New Jersey admins.
Lesson to all other Armenian groups and institutions: please assign other people who are capable to run your social media groups and don't leave them vulnerable.
