 Yaşar Kurt — An Armenian Rock Star of Turkey with an Unusual Fate


He was born on August 16, 1968, in Istanbul. In 1990, he entered the Faculty of Economics at Anadolu University, but before completing his studies, he turned to music. He founded the band Beyaz Yunus (“White Dolphin”). He gained popularity in Turkey after releasing his debut album Sokak Şarkıları (“Street Songs”) in Cologne in 1994. In 2003, he released his fourth album Anne (“Mother”), for the first time under his own music label. That same year, he became one of the founders of Barışarock, a major rock festival in Turkey. In 2004, he composed the music for the popular ATV television series Love Hill.
In 2007, at the age of forty, Yaşar Kurt learned from his father that he was not actually Turkish by ethnicity, but Armenian. After his father’s revelation, he began to learn the Armenian language. He was also baptized as an Armenian Apostolic Christian and took a new Armenian name, Arshak. In 2007, together with Arto Tunçboyacıyan, he organized a project dedicated to the memory of Hrant Dink. The musicians formed the band YaşAr, named by combining the shortened forms of Yaşar and Arto.
